The Rays' astounding "Game 162" finish demands a deep rewind

Playoff baseball is the best baseball. We can all agree on that. But every once in a while, the regular season lines up so perfectly, so dramatically, that it creates a situation you'll never find in the postseason. We're talking about a simultaneous, multi-team, multi-game horserace to the finish line. To understand just how wild that can be, look no further than the final night of the 2011 MLB season.
We begin, as always, at the end. In extra innings of a tied Yankees-Rays game in Florida, Evan Longoria stands at the plate with a chance to walk off for the win ... and a playoff spot. The fact that things even got to that point is ridiculous. It depended on Tampa rallying into wild card position throughout September. It depended on the Boston Red Sox falling apart. Tonight, it depended on the miserable Baltimore Orioles choosing to give it their all just for the fun of it ... and perhaps getting some help from a former Ray. It depended on Longoria and his teammates-- some of them rather obscure-- making one last push in a historic month-long rally.
"Game 162" was one of the coolest nights in baseball history. Before we watch Evan Longoria try to end it, let's rewind.

  • There is, I think, an interesting postscript regarding the Orioles and Red Sox. Prior to the 2011 season, the Orioles had hired a new manager, former New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Texas Rangers manager, Buck Showalter. Nevertheless, the Orioles finished the 2011 season 69-93, their 14th straight year with a losing record. Meanwhile, though they missed the playoffs, the Red Sox finished 2011 with 90-72, their 14th straight winning season. In his eight years as manager, Terry Francona had led the Sox to six 90+ win seasons, and not one, but two World Series wins. So what do the Red Sox do that off-season? They fire Francona and hire former Texas Rangers and New Yotk Mets (and Japanese Pacific League Chiba Lotte Marines) manager, Bobby Valentine. The following season, 2012, the Orioles end up going 93-69, and made the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. Meanwhile, the Red Sox go just 69-93, and finish with not only their first losing season in 15 years, but their worst record in 47 years. Go figure.

That moment is considered to be the culture changing moment of the Buckle Up Birds era teams, and was a catalyst for the best baseball Baltimore had seen in roughly 15 years. • Here's a suggestion for a rewind video, but it's about cricket. Even still, it would be perfect for a rewind video. So here goes: In cricket, the way scoring works is one team bats and puts up a score, while the second team tries to chase it down afterwards. If both teams score the same amount, then they play a super over, which is like overtime. Each team plays 6 deliveries and whoever scores more wins. Now a tie in cricket is very unusual and there are usually maybe 5 super overs played in a year. Then the rule for if a super over is tied used to be that the team that scored more boundaries (big hits) would win. What this did was give a team going into a super over an inherent advantage. It had happened one time between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, a domestic league, but was never changed as people thought it would never happen in a big game. In 2019, the world cup final was between England and New Zealand. England had never won a world cup before, despite being the creator of the sport. New Zealand were in their second consecutive world cup final after being the runner-ups in 2015 to rivals Australia. New Zealand batted first, and England did not look like they were in a good position. Then their player Ben Stokes played really well to tie the game, sending it to a super over. England batted first in the super over, and New Zealand had to chase. Needing 2 to win off the last ball of the super over, the New Zealand batsman scored 1 off the last ball and got out, just short of the second run. The super over was tied, but England won as they had scored more boundaries. This allowed England to win their first world cup, and meaning New Zealand lost their second consecutive world cup. Many people were unhappy about the result and the tied super over rule was changed very quickly to just continue super overs until someone won. This came into play this year during the IPL, as a super over between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab was tied, and went to a second super over.

  • The only thing this video misses is the Bruce Chen rumor. Chen had finished his season with the also-ran Royals but there was talk that if a Game 163 tiebreaker were necessary, the Red Sox, whose rotation was wretched, were going to trade for him and very hastily get him in uniform to be their starter. All this for one game -- his contract was up at the end of 2011, and he wouldn't have been eligible for the playoffs proper.
