Patrick Ewing never won an NBA championship. Here's what left him empty-handed.

This one stings. A surface-level summary of 1990s NBA history is basically: “Michael Jordan won the championships he was around to win, and Hakeem Olajuwon got the other ones in the middle.” Part of the reason the series Untitled exists is to better explain that era. With details and context, we hope to show that those oversimplified truths hang on some complex set-ups, near misses, and fascinating stories. Patrick Ewing’s Knicks wrote several of those stories; perhaps the most heartbreaking.
Ewing spent almost all of his legendary career in New York, and almost all of that stint competing for a championship. But, yes, Jordan interfered, albeit not as decisively as the short version of the story would have you think. Those Bulls were underdogs at one point, and even after that, came an inch here or a second there from losing to Ewing and company. Those inches and seconds describe some of the most sickening moments in the history of Knicks fandom.
Sickening, too, were the fates of Ewing’s teams that didn’t have to (or get to) face Jordan: The ones that fell to the Pacers, the Heat, and of course Hakeem Olajuwon’s Rockets in the brutal 1994 Finals.
Patrick Ewing retired without a championship, but we hope this episode of Untitled will help you appreciate how excellent he was and how rivals, fate, and bad timing conspired to stop him. You can’t tell this ringless story in a simple sentence or two.

  • coulda woulda shoulda. Sorry the Knicks didn't have the supporting cast that the Pistons, then the Bulls had and made it through only once when Jordan was off playing baseball and they were gifted a series win over the bulls in 94 on a number of very biased calls in NY including three free throws for starks after he kicked his leg out and hit Pippen. So yeah MJ was the reason as was Hakeem. The author of this video spins and twists himself in knots to try and make it something more than it was.....dozens of what ifs.

Patrick deserves to be in the 2021 top 50 NBA GOAT , Patrick had a SIGNIFICANT impact to NBA games 👍🏼. I am an NBA Superstars Fan , i love ALL NBA Teams (questionable on D.Pistons, but because of type of game they played -jordan rule 🤦🏻‍♂️ AND walking out during a game 😳, caused/made better nba rules how a "professional sport" be played👍🏼).

  • Jordan isn't the reason Ewing never won a title. Ewing is the reason Ewing never won a title. He was a great REGULAR SEASON player, but was a playoff choke artist. THE PLAY against the Rockets where Ewing blew a wide open layup is a metaphor for his entire career. All he needs to do is take one dribble, two steps, and dunk it. Instead he puts up a LEFT handed layup that doinks out and he loses the game. I'm a Spurs fan, and we had a saying back in the day. It goes "When it matters, Ewing shatters." That tells the story of his career...

  • "Why didnt Patrick Ewing win a title?" Didnt watch the video, but what immediately came to mind (besides MJ) is because his 2nd best offensive option was John Starks. (Note: As a Knick fan, I loved John Starks , BUT I loved him much better as a spark, preferably off the bench, NOT as the 2nd offensive option) Would also point out that the year that many believe they could have beat MJ with Van Gundy, Patrick Ewing roamed 20 feet off the bench, and the Commisioner did the rest.

  • Hhhmmm uh something truly caught me off guard here. At 2:06 the narrator said the bulls were a 6 seed in 1990? Is that true? How could that be? They were just 1 year away from their first 3peat and already had Pippen and Grant. You are telling me FIVE teams in their conference had a better record than the bulls? This seems unlikely accurate.

  • The video is mostly spot on. Like many loyal Knicks fans, I cheered and watched frustrating loses from every Patrick Ewing game and run. From the Knicks often getting owned by the Boston Celtics until that iconic game 5 victory of all places - at the Boston Garden. From not being able to beat the Pistons until the Pistons were old and tired in the 1992 playoffs. And of course, The Bulls. Then their rivalries against the Miami Heat and Pacers. On a competitive level as a fan, I will say thank you to Patrick and the supporting cast for good memories even if my beloved Knicks never won that coveted title. Looking back, I blame incompetent ownership and management. It's hard to succeed and form some type of solid stability when Patrick had eight different head coaches. And about the press saying that Patrick never had a number two? Xavier McDaniel fell right into the Knicks laps. And they blew it! If there was anytime as a Knicks fan I was absolutely pissed, that was it! Overall, I will always appreciate what Patrick did for the Knicks. He had flaws, but the Garden used to be on fire when he played.

  • I still argue to this day the 97 team was the best team of the Ewing era. They still played the tough defense hallmarked from the Riley era, but it was a better offensive team too. It was Pat's last elite year before the injury in 98. He finally had a guard who could create his own shot in Houston, and after a slow start trying to fit in Houston really got it going late in the year and in the playoffs. LJ while not what he once was, was still a low post force and was developing that 3 pt shot. Starks was Sixth Man of the Year. Childs/Ward rotating at PG. That team was well equipped to face the Bulls. That series would have went 7 for sure.

  • Ewing might be the most underrated superstar of the 90's. Ewing didn't have the supporting cast neccesary to beat bulls or rockets in a series. The knicks were basically Ewing or nothing offensively. Those knicks teams were GREAT defensively but avg at best offensively. No disrespect to starks but should not be the second best offensive player on a team.
