How the Pacers ruined a championship contender with tiny moves and one big injury

This is a different kind of Collapse. The Pacers didn't fall from best record in the NBA to the league's basement. They did fall, though, and while their decline wasn't so deep, it was particularly weird.
A lot of people remember Paul George's broken leg, and that played a big part in a great team's demise. The Pacers, though, showed signs of fracturing long before George's injury. (That was an unintentional pun, but we're just gonna leave it.) Seemingly minor moves by team president Larry Bird -- a little trade here, a little signing there -- rattled the team's stars, and perhaps contributed to measurable drops in production.
Bad vibes led to public grouchiness, which led to some surprising departures, which led a team that was already teetering before George's broken leg to capsize for real.
The Pacers' fall from elite to ordinary looks simple from afar, but it includes some strange details you might not remember.

  • I almost hated the Pacers because they almost defeated the Heat in 2013 and 2014. I was a Bron fan back then. 🤣

  • Even harder watching this knowing the pacers ownership wouldnt pull the trigger to get anthony davis and gave a bullshit excuse saying they have a responisblity to indianapolis to be playoff contenders so they couldnt risk it.

  • I wasn't going to watch the other one but I was linked here from Kobe's Lakers ruining video because I am from Indiana and then the 4th grade I went on a class field trip. For school. To watch an IMAX documentary about the Rivalry between the Bulls Michael Jordan, who I am a huge fan of now. I walked out of that documentary, being from Indiana, hating. Hating the Chicago Bulls, I knew we were going to win a championship. I haven't even watch this video and I am f****** pissed! I never knew the f****** story I just thought the better man won, nope capitalism ruins it again.

  • For A diehard Pacer fan who has followed this team closely for 30 years, you did A very good job breaking this down. Larry Bird made terrible decisions. How You fire Frank Vogel who pleaded to remain on the job is way beyond Me. The fact he got this team to back to back eastern conference finals with the only free agent signing being David West was an amazing accomplishment. That 7 game first rd playoff loss to Toronto was very competitive. They panicked. No way Vogel should have been fired. At the time i thought the Granger trade was good because when Granger finally came off the disabled list that year, it seemed to affect chemistry. You almost got the feeling that there was some jealousy on Grangers end but you made good points. That was a terrible trade in retrospect even though i have to admit at the time i was all for it and all in. To Birds defense Granger never was near the player ever again and quickly faded away and retired. But yeah you never know what he could have sparked coming off the bench in that Heat series and there really wasnt any need to panic even though the team finally did start to slow down after that torrid start even though in retrospect that was to be expected in a long 82 game season. You never know what would have happed if that trade was never made.

  • Championship contender? They took Miami to 7 one year and made the ECF b2b seasons, but that was entirely due to being in the East. Put them in the West I don't even know if they make it past the first round. Anyone who followed the NBA at the time knows those Indy teams were NOT championship contenders

  • Hope I'm wrong, but I have a feeling there will be a Celtics Collapse video in like 2026 where Gordon Hayward is grayed out first, then a lot of time is spent talking about this year, followed by Smart being traded and it tanking their chemistry worse than it already is now, pissing off Jaylen Brown, Kemba leaves, Stevens takes another head coaching job after differences with Ainge, Brown is traded in a lateral move for a player that doesn't mesh with Tatum, that player departs next, and Tatum just ends up walking for nothing.

RH and LS are perfect examples of that. A professional athlete should never get rattled by competition. It's why Indy is going to regret signing Wentz... he crumbled immediately when Hurts was drafted..

  • Larry Bird was president of basketball operations, but there was another individual at the general manager position as well. Bird took a fairly lengthy leave of absence during the twilight of the "blue collar gold swagger" days. I never knew how much of the shenanigans were Bird's fault (he drafted both some really great and not so great players) or Kevin Pritchard's. Either way, the front office has been a fan's nightmare for years now.

  • Hibbert fell of after a rule change about less contact while attempting to block a player. He always made blocks at the limit and these where later fouls. That's the excuse for his defense falling of, which was a big part of his game. There is still no excuse for him not rebounding or scoring.

  • Basketball Analytics really started around the 2013-2014 season, as they put certain cameras in the stadium to track players, their movements, shots, etc. Having a lineup where your Small Forward (Lance Stephenson), Power Forward (David West) and Center (Roy Hibbert) can't shoot, that is what killed them. I understand the chemistry argument, but once teams started stretching the floor, and then forcing the pacers to shoot long 2s, that's what killed them. IMO
